Thanks for the warning, AT&T

After a day out with the family, looking for an out-of-the-way beach, I got this text:

AT&T Free Msg: This is a courtesy reminder that you have used 65% of your 300MB data plan allowance for the bill cycle ending on 09/01/12. Any overage is charged @ $20/300MB. Learn more at www.att.com/dataplans. Tip: Mobile Data is unlimited over Wifi.

Glad to know you guys don’t want folks to get anywhere near 100% of their data plans.

Finally settled on a new cell phone

So I think I’m going to go with the Samsung Eternity, after weeks of waffling between simply wanting a phone, wanting a phone that was a step up from my RAZR, then back to thinking if I was going to pay as much as I was for the Eternity (about $150, after rebate), I might as well get a freaking iPhone! After at least two months of consideration, I was finally sold by this review. Especially convincing was this note added a few weeks after the initial review:

So in summary, must have downloadable apps straight to your phone…Opera Mini 4.2, Gmail ande Google Maps. That should satisfy all your multimedia, web browsing and email needs. Won’t need to pay for the PDA or iPhone data package, and you will have a very good phone to last you at least another two years or until your next upgrade times. Thanks all!

See, yeah. That was my thing. I love the idea of a touchscreen phone, but if I’m going to go all out on this phone thing, I want video and a relatively good camera, too — and an iPhone doesn’t have video. Plus, there’s the major drawback of the required $30 data plan you have to get with an iPhone. People, I’m literally on a computer about 15 hours a day. If I’m at home, I’m usually online. If I’m at work, I’m of course online. Do I really need all that online access? No. The one thing I will concede on is getting a texting plan, finally. Ugh. I do NOT like the idea of getting a texting plan, even though everyone and their mom texts, especially after reading this story about how transmitting texts costs nothing for cell phone companies now that the infrastructure is in place. But I guess I gotta bite the bullet, especially since two very dear friends last summer were shocked to find out I didn’t get their text messages of condolences. No joke.

Cell phone dilemma

Even though most of my life is online, and I almost don’t keep in touch with folks unless you’re accessible by email, IM or Facebook, I a bit of a dinosaur when it comes to personal tech.  Sure, I was one of the first people I ever knew to own an mp3 player and I used a student award to buy myself my first digital camera. Whatever. But the idea of IM’ing when I’m in the car, or at the beach, or eating dinner at a restaurant. I’m not at that point where I need to know all these things immediately wherever I am.

The iPhone sure is pretty, but its too expensive for my taste right now. I am leaning toward the LG Shine, but this review in Gizmodo was not an admiring one. What’s left? Possibly a Blackberry? Trinity wants to buy the Curve, but I don’t know if I’m ready for such a serious phone.

I want my next cell phone to make good phone calls, has the capabilities for the alarms I need, can take a decent photo, take decent video and maybe even send some emails? That would be cool. But the idea of texting? I am not for it. Already right now, I’m blogging and IM’ing at the same time. I dread the idea of blogging, IM’ing AND texting at the same time. That’s just too much.

Sigh. Any ideas on which phone I should get?

Been MIA

My apologies for being preoccupied the last week or so. I’ve obviously been reading stuff still, but haven’t had a chance to post lately. Let’s see…I was busy moving my Wedding Decorator blog to its own host (good bye, Blogger!). I’ve been looking around for a new cell phone (do I want to stick with a regular phone? Do I want a smartphone? Do I want to hold out for an iPhone?) I was also busy getting nominated to co-president of AAJA’s Los Angeles chapter. My bad.

I’m still not sure how to feel about the whole co-prez thing. Thank God I didn’t have to actually run for election. I’ve heard those things can get kind of negative.

I’ll try to not be so bad at keeping up the blog. I’ll also let you know how the cell phone thing works out. As much as my life is online, I really am resistant to changing my habits. I don’t even Twitter. For shame!
