Stuff to like about bed rest

I’ve mostly been complaining about being pregnant and especially about being on bed rest, I know. I’m not normally this negative, but you get cranky when you can’t do stuff for yourself, go pick up whatever food you have a hankering for or your fingers are tingly all the time (which mine are).

But, I realize there are good things about being pregnant (namely, the baby at the end) and bed rest and its accompanying activities. So let me count the ways I can appreciate bed rest.

Bed rest strategy

Have I mentioned yet how much I hate staying home all day? Just checking. I really hate staying home all day, so this bed rest order really rankles. My first full day was especially bad. I think my mistake was breaking out the laptop first thing in the morning and kind of sitting on it, in front of the TV, all day. All that earned me was a splitting headache for most of the night.

So late last night, as my splitting headache subsided, with some help from Trinity, who I insisted come home early, I made a list of things to do as I sit on my butt with my legs elevated. The plan: kind of treat most of the day like a work day, then break out the laptop around 9 p.m., the usual time I would break it out after work.

Bed rest on doctor’s orders

During our Lamaze classes, our teacher expanded a little bit on how we didn’t want to be ordered on bed rest. In theory, it sounds great — being ordered by the doctor that you can’t go into work, staying home, eating, sleeping and watching TV all day. But no, she said, it is actually incredibly boring — you can’t go out and meet up with friends, have lunch, go grocery shopping, or do stuff you wouldn’t ordinarily think of as work. Upon hearing all that, I was like, that is the last thing I’d want to be prescribed. So of course, that’s what I got as I go from 33 to 34 weeks.
