Playing tourists, woohoo!

You must know I love to play tourists, so knowing that my friend Belinda and her family were coming to stay with us for a wedding in Sierra Madre, I took those days off so I could entertain them and also entertain myself! Heheh. I swear, they’re coming to town was as much fun for me as it was for them, aside from a few mishaps — like a collapsing futon and a neurotic cat. Yeah, that’s a long story.

The happy family

Having them over, despite the slightly crowded feeling in our little place and Kip’s tantrums, was so much fun. Seriously, why do all our friends live so far away? Anyway, I was originally going to take them to Malibu for lunch the day they arrived, but their flight was delayed so they didn’t get to Agoura Hills till about 3 and they were dog tired from waiting at the airport, then flying, then getting through 405 traffic. Heheh, that’s L.A.!

A cool Memorial Day

I marveled at the weather  as we listened to the elite runners cross the finish line at the L.A. Marathon while driving to Garden Grove for my friend’s funeral. I knew that the runners had been lamenting (a nicer word for whining) about the move to Memorial Day Holiday and mentioned it to Trinity. Trinity and his family used to live in the heart of L.A. and he told me that it was always a nightmare trying to get to church on marathon day; the race route once went right past the front doors of his church.

The weather was no excuse for complaining that marathon day shouldn’t be on Memorial Day, especially since today’s race had ideal weather — overcast and cool. I think it was God’s way of pointing out that if you honor His day, He’ll give you good weather.

An old friend on life support*

Found out about a friend’s heart attack via LA Observed at 2 a.m. and I’m a little stunned. I’d found him on Twitter and had begun following him. I’d been meaning to actually contact him, especially since I wanted him to become a member of AAJA again.

Both Trinity and I knew Vu — pictured to the right, smiling big — from our time at the Daily Titan. I probably worked with him more, as I worked with Vu for at least a year and a half, one semester of which he served as managing editor, I believe. Vu was so cool — all us cub reporters wanted to be like him. He was a freelancer at the OC Weekly at that point, and he just seemed to have swagger that none of us ever thought we would attain. I admit I crushed on him a little, because he seemed so on point with the Daily Titan. Yes, silly, I know. Sam knows what I’m talking about.

Wedding in Malibu

Jinah and Matt's weddingAfter several months of back-and-forth wedding planning over email with Jinah, she is now a married woman, after a spectacular wedding at a Malibu house — more like a mansion, but you know, that’s semantics.

The wedding itself was very beautiful, the ceremony done by a very funny AAJA San Diego chapter veteran by the name of Lee Ann Kim.

I hate to admit this, though, but I was distracted by my pain throughout the night. First off, I stood throughout the ceremony so I could rush to the back and light the floating candles before everyone sat down for dinner. But the ceremony went a little longer than I anticipated, so I stood in my medium-height heels and developed a nice knot in each calf that I’m still feeling a day later.

A token request

One of my most loyal Wedding Decorator readers and content providers, Shruti, who’s also a great buddy, had a request recently.

She’s looking for a pair of old school Los Angeles MTA tokens for her wedding come July, to make into cufflinks. She’s not the first to come up with this idea — Etsy has a somewhat affordable pair for sale, ready made. Anyway, I’d like to come up with these tokens, since she’s such a great friend, and I’m hoping someone in the L.A. blogosphere can help me out.

If anyone can pass on a pair of these tokens, I have an old school, L.A. broadcast item of interest I can trade. Let me know!
