Labor-Intensive Day

When you are a working mother with children under 5, it should be common knowledge that there is no such thing as a day off — unless your kids are in daycare during your day off. I was on my own with the boys, and the previous week, was considering a trip with them to visit their dad’s office in Santa Ana using public transportation so they could ride the train. I nixed this plan for several reasons — too ambitious to do on my own, too hot, and finally, Metrolink suspended its service on Labor Day. Plan B was to take them to the splash pad where we had Chris’ first birthday party. We got there early and…..there was no water. At a splash pad. We stuck it out for an hour — and Chris had a great time running around the park, forcing me to chase after him. Plan C was to take them to a shopping center we frequented before moving — but then they were both scared of the splash pad. After a short time at a dry playground in the same shopping center, I gave up, we picked up lunch (at Zankou, because that was Mama’s treat) and went home. After we all ate and the boys were watching TV shows on my phone, I saw Mikey starting to nod off in his seat. So I hustle them upstairs for nap time. My Labor Day rest consisted of about an hour of uninterrupted screening time for “Taken 2.”

Fancy Zankou open in Toluca Lake

Trying to eat all that I should eat every day for me and Peanut is harder than you think. According to the book I’m reading, I’m supposed to get three servings of protein, three servings of Vitamin C, four servings of calcium, three to four servings of green leafy and yellow vegetables, one to two servings of other fruits, six servings of whole grains and legumes a day, eat plenty of iron-rich foods, plus about four servings daily of healthy fats.

Dude. That is not an easy feat to accomplish.

Anyway, Saturday, I had a hankering for chicken, so I sought out the four-month-old location of Zankou in Toluca Lake.

Zankou Chicken loves me

My maiden name preserved by Zankou

Or, at least they loved the article I wrote about their no longer new Burbank location when I was a reporter for the Glendale News-Press back in 2006. Good Lord! It’s been a while since I was a reporter. Go figure that Zankou would preserve my maiden name in print. Heheh.

Anyway, I have Facebook to thank for my latest run to Zankou. Someone became a fan of Zankou, so I became a fan. Then, as I was looking over my privacy settings and checking out my search page preview, I realized, “ooh…Zankou would be perfect for dinner tonight.” So I hightailed it all the way to Van Nuys (after dark; Trinity would be very upset to hear about that) for some shawerma. Yummm….

But that was after I checked out their new site (which, on Saturday night, was devoid of a style sheet, but it looks like they have everything working now. By the way, it looks really good! Way more professional than your previous site.) and seeing that they opened a new location in Glendale and are about to open a location in Toluca Lake! This is huge! I no longer have to trek into the, er, too far from work to get some of their excellent chicken and garlic spread! Woohoo!

Now, if Chick-fil-A and Chipotle would just open closer to either work or home….then I’d be a satisfied woman.
