Malibu

Another birthday week, come and gone

Every year, when my birthday rolls around, I feel its a good time for Trinity and I to take time off work. Pre-kids, it might mean a vacation — like the week we went up the coast to check out Hearst Castle and the Monterey Aquarium — but now that we have kids, it means staying home while the boys are at daycare.

Mama's birthday!

My birthday happened to fall on Memorial Day this year, so we of course stayed home and fired up the barbecue. Later in the day, after the boys had napped and we had our big lunch, we went to Barnes and Noble and bought Mike some new Dr. Seuss books.

Mini road trip to Neptune’s Net

I’ve been itching to take advantage of our summer-like weather these last couple of weeks. Last Monday, I finagled our way to Ventura, but the Nina was a disappointment. So yesterday, I convinced Trinity that we should try out a seafood and burger joint at the north tip of Malibu called Neptune’s Net.

It was pretty awesome, warm weather — we didn’t even really need the thermals we were wearing until much later — not too crowded and seafood that wasn’t too expensive. I am already planning a return trip, next time to try their steamed seafood — w00t! Who’s with me????

Time travel along the coast

Am I obsessed with Malibu? Not in the way most people are, I think. I think I mostly am taking advantage of being so close to such gorgeous beaches and scenery. Like, if I lived close to Griffith Park, I’d be there all the time, but I’m not — I’m a 15 minute drive from Zuma Beach. What of it?

Anyway, I don’t know what I was thinking about yesterday, but whatever that was turned into an online foray into the California Coastal Records Project. What a fascinating site! Sort of like the USC Digital Archive and the UCLA Digital Collection. You can literally search a location in California and look at how its changed between 1972 and now or move up and down the coast in pictures.

Paradise Cove in 1972

Anyway, check out this photo. This is Paradise Cove in 1972. Malibu looks so gorgeous and…empty. Click to enlarge. Fast forward to 1979…

Visiting the first house in Malibu

Ah, four-day weekend. We topped it off with a visit to the Adamson House, a historical landmark in Malibu overlooking Surfrider Beach.

Adamson House

Did you know that Malibu had historical landmarks? Heheh. I couldn’t take pictures in the house during the tour, but it was really super cool. The house, lived in by the Adamson and Rindge families, who bought the 13-acre property for about $10-$12 an acre. Can you imagine!

The house is full of history — California history. The home and its outdoor details were built by the same architect who built the Wiltern theater. The entire estate’s architectural details were actually very ahead of their time — indoor bathrooms attached to each bedroom, double sinks in each bathroom, an upstairs kitchen. I swear those are features the experts always harp about on Designed To Sell. (Just kidding)
