My emergency room adventure

As I Twittered tonight’s NBA championship game, (WHOOOO LAKERS!), which happened to be not as fervent and anxious as my Game 4 Tweets (partly because I’m at home, not work, and partly because I could just feel that the Lakers were going to seal it up in Orlando), I casually mentioned I had to go to the emergency room last night. My tweets, which feed into my Facebook status updates, immediately got several inquiring comments as to why and am I OK. I’m fine. I just find it hilarious I had to go to the emergency room for what was essentially a severe allergic reaction.

Yeah. Basically, after getting to work yesterday, I noticed I was feeling majorly itchy. Maybe an hour or so into my shift, I noticed raised bumps forming on my forearms. In the restroom, I lifted my shirt and discovered I had the same red, itchy bumps all over my belly, waist and back and promptly started to panic. At my desk, I could barely work for all the Googling I did on itchy, red bumps and trying to ignore the less savory images to figure out what I actually had. It seemed to be hives. I was right.

When I got home, I discovered the bumps had spread even further than I thought — they were everywhere. I don’t even really want to say where everywhere was. And it was beginning to spread to my eyes. After repeated calls to Trinity to hurry home, he finally got the picture when I said the bumps had spread to my eyes. So he told me to look up the nearest emergency room, which happened to be in Thousand Oaks, and as soon as he got home, we hightailed it to the hospital.

(The picture above, by the way, was taken from Trin’s iPhone. We joked it looked like I’d gone a few rounds with Mike Tyson or Manny Pacquiao. Yes, I was still joking around, until they shot me up with Benadryl.)

Long story short, the nurses and doctors determined that I did actually have hives and promptly treated me with steroids, benadryl and something else I don’t remember. The medication made me vomit (don’t even ask what color it was, it was pretty gross). But we finally got home about 3 a.m. and I climbed straight into bed.

The next morning, most of the bumps had gone down, but you can still see where I had them, because there are some spots. Plus there are some new rashes around my bra strap line and my waistline. But at least its not as bad as it was last night.

And that wasn’t even the worst of it. Heheh, I kept telling Trinity, I haven’t even shown you the worst of it…And by the way, I have no idea what triggered the allergic reaction. To my knowledge, I’m not allergic to anything and I can easily list all the things I ate yesterday: Cap’n Crunchberries, Earl Grey tea with milk and sugar, water, orange juice, Koo Koo Roo original chicken, green beans and a sweet potato. I’ve had all these foods before and I’ve never had any problem, so if you know what could have set me off, let me know.

Anyway, I’m better. Not all better, but better. Go Lakers!
