Web hosting nightmare

I’ve been thinking for the last few months about moving Wedding Decorator to its own host, since its now got a bigger audience than this here site, plus its about time. Anyway, I’d been keeping an eye out for good options and the comments on a recent post on Patterico gave me a whole host of suggestions to investigate.

Well, the unimaginable has happened to Patterico — his webhosting company sold off his domain name, Patterico.com, and now he has to blog under Patterico.net. *shudder* Now excuse me as I cross off 1&1 off my list of possible web hosting services…

I really feel for him. I know what its like to lose your domain name (although I lost mine because my domain name registrar had a seriously old email address for me and I was overdue two years — who knew!). It sucks especially since he’s had some major outages the last couple of weeks, what with the increase in traffic because of the election. Patterico, if you read this, try out Apollo Hosting. They’re still within budget hosting limits and the folks at Web Hosting Geeks seem to love them.

For myself, I may end up going with HostGator. It’s a tad cheaper than Apollo and seems to have pretty good reviews. Hey, every penny counts, and if I can make Wedding Decorator a success, then maybe I’ll switch to Apollo.

Darleene — have you noticed that this is my third or so comment today? I’m going backward in time.

I’m also looking for hosting services. Good to know to avoid 1&1.

I’m not a Mac person, but one who is uses Mac Highway (http://www.machighway.com/) and thinks very highly of it. If you’re using Mac apps, that might be the way to go.

Since I’m definitely NOT doing that, I’ll be looking elsewhere. Thanks for the suggestions.

Steve, I ended up going with hostgator, and I’m pretty happy with them. I will probably end up switching my hosting from GoDaddy to hostgator when it expires.
