Stainless steel appliances trend officially goes overboard

Stainless steel toy appliances

I came upon this scene on Sunday while searching frantically for a gift for an 8-year-old boy. I snapped this quick picture, but let me lay it out for you what we’re looking at here.

On that upper shelf would be toys resembling a stainless steel Kitchen Aid stand mixer. On the bottom shelf are toys resembling a stainless steel microwave and a stainless steel¬† toaster — a toaster, by the way, that looks a lot like the one in my own kitchen. If you look hard enough, you’ll also see a toy resembling a stainless steel coffee maker behind some boxes.

I’m not sure what I’m more disturbed by — the fact that “stainless steel” has crossed over into the realm of toy appliances, or that toy appliances now include microwaves and coffee machines.

We had stainless steel appliances in my family’s bakery business 20 years ago. Stainless steel still reminds me of work. Keep it out of my kitchen please!
