Survey of minorities about other minorities

New America Media’s recent survey has good news and bad news. First, the good news:

…the telephone poll of 1,105 people in all 50 states, evenly divided among the three groups, found that they have a great deal in common, including strong feelings of patriotism and religious belief. Most significantly, more than 85 percent of responders said they should put aside their differences and work together to help their communities.

…despite the groups’ isolation and prejudices, the poll found that the three groups have some positive opinions about one another. More than 58 percent of African Americans and Asians said that Hispanic culture and values have “enriched the quality of life for all Americans.”

And although a majority of responders in all three groups said there is “a lot of discrimination” against their community, more than 65 percent of Hispanics and Asians said African Americans had helped all ethnic and racial groups by “leading the fight for civil rights and against discrimination.”

And now the bad news, which I’m pulling from the WaPo article:

  • The 3 minority groups — African Americans, Hispanics (or Latinos, whatever you prefer) and Asian Americans would rather do business than whites than with each other
  • 40% of the Asian Americans and Hispanics surveyed fear blacks and associate them with crime
  • A similar percentage of Hispanics and blacks say Asians don’t deal with them fairly in business (think Asian storekeepers and how they treat their customers)
  • 1/3 of the Asians and half of the blacks surveyed believe Hispanics are taking valuable jobs
  • A huge majority of the respondents said most of their friends are mostly from their ethnic groups and an even bigger percentage says people in their churches or schools are from their ethnic groups (black churches, Mexican churches, Asian churches)
  • More than 70 percent of the Hispanics and Asians and 61 percent of blacks said they’d never dated outside their ethnic groups.

So disappointing. So I have a challenge for you. If you don’t think that you have any biases, that you’re enlightened and have got friends in every ethnic group, look at your pictures.

Interracial couples unite!

If they look like this, then congratulations. Here, we’ve got two black/Filipino (including one hapa) couples, plus a Hispanic/Asian couple and another couple whose ethnicity I’m not sure of. But if your pictures look kinda like a sea of Asians, or a sea of Hispanics or a sea of blacks — its time to get out of your comfort zone.

Ah, yes, and notice not really any whites there, no black females, etc. Yep, you’re so much better than everyone else.

Thanks for noticing there were no whites or black females. But if I made sure there were whites or black females, then the picture would not be genuine, hm? BTW, did you realize a hapa was half Asian/half white?
