A nigger, a wetback and a chink walk into a theater…

Wait. That guy on the New York Times’ theater page looks familiar. Wasn’t he the best man at my wedding?
OK, I can’t keep up the ruse. Obviously, from the title of this post, YOU KNOW I must be talking about NWC, the show that Trinity’s best friend Miles is a part of. So please, please, please, do not spam me for using those words in my title.

Anyway. So it so happens that with NWC’s return to LA for a two-month run (for which I’m already planning a church trip), not only did they show up on the Kevin & Bean show (which used to be my favorite morning radio show before I started working nights), the New York Times’ Sharon Waxman decided to review the two-year-old show.

Opening its first major run this week — two months at the Ivar Theater in Hollywood — the comedy, whose three-word title consists simply of those racial slurs, seems remarkably well timed to land in the middle of the national discomfort zone.

In the age of Don Imus and Michael Richards, in light of the renewed scrutiny of hip-hop lyrics and shock-jock blabbermouths, “N*W*C,” as it is called for short, examines the power of timeworn taboos, attempting to deflate them through a frontal, often funny, assault.

Now, I don’t know if this is NWC’s first major run, seeing as how they did a pretty well-received stint at the Los Angeles Theater Center after their run at UCLA ended, but whatever. She does have a point about the show being all the more relevant after the Don Imus and Michael Richards brouhahas — in fact, I’ve invited Miles to guest blog here at least once, but he’s busy getting paid. Heheh. Don’t worry, I’m not offended.

Anyway, so this is my opportunity to tell you all to make sure to check out his show, if you didn’t already after my little package on their show last year. Here’s their Myspace page, where you can link to their Ivar Theater flyer, and here’s their regular site, where you can buy tickets. And if you stick around to talk to them afterward, tell them Darleene sent ya. ^_-
